1989 World Junior Championship
The 1989 World Junior Championship was the 9th World Junior Championship. It was held from August 10 through August 20 in Trois-Rivières, QC. In the finale, the USA beat Cuba 11-3 to take their second straight Gold. Danny Melendez hit .480 and took home MVP honors. Sal Urso saved two games and went the distance in the championship game, striking out nine. Brian Sackinsky struck out 20 in a win over Brazil and was 2-0, 0.56 overall. Other US players bound for the majors were Tom Nevers (.300), Chris Roberts (.200, 2 HR, 9 R), Gregg Zaun (.182, 7 BB, 7 R), Chris Weinke (.133), Charlie Greene (0 for 2), Derek Wallace (0 for 1), Albie Lopez (1-0, 0.00) and Scott Klingenbeck (1-0, 0.00).
Australia got the Bronze at 5-2. Taiwan, with Chun-Chang Yeh, was 4th.
Venezuela, Canada and Brazil were all 3-2 to tie for 5th. In 8th was 2-3 Italy. Mexico and the Netherlands Antilles tied for 9th at 1-4. The Netherlands and France tied for last at 0-5.
