Biographical Information[edit]

Yannick Wildenhain has pitched in the Bundesliga-1 and for the German national team.

With Germany for the 2015 European Junior Championship, he allowed six runs (two earned) in four innings, beating Spain but losing to Italy. [1] He made his Bundesliga-1 debut with the Mainz Athletics, going 0 for 2 as a backup second baseman. [2] In the 2016 European Junior Championship, he saved Daniel Mendelsohn's win over the Czech Republic; in 3 games, he allowed two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 IP. He tied for 2nd in the event in appearances. [3] In the 2016 Bundesliga-1, he was 5 for 14 with 6 walks, 3 steals and a double, backing up Peter Johannessen in left field. He again did not pitch in the regular season, though he was 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in the postseason, beating Aaron Hornostaj in the semifinals. Mainz only used five pitchers in the regular season: Lucas Dickman, Eric Massingham, Manuel Möller, Tim Stahlmann and Jan-Niclas Stöcklin. [4]

In the 2017 CEB Cup, he was trounced by Unipol Bologna in a loss to Andrea Pizziconi, giving up 7 hits, 10 runs and 9 earned runs in 2 2/3 IP. [5] In the regular season for Mainz, he was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and hit .222/.323/.370 as a backup 2B/OF. [6] He was 1-2 with two saves and a 6.95 ERA for the 2018 Athletics, walking 18 in 22 IP. He tied Marcel Hering and Mandelsohn for 4th in the Bundealiga-1 South in saves. [7]

Wildenhain retired all six batters he faced in the 2019 European Championship U23, half by strikeout, and beat Great Britain. [8] He had a 3-0, 6.68 record for Mainz in '19. [9] The next year, he had a 4-2, 5.63 mark and was 1 for 5 with a walk and a run. He tied Dustin Ward and Marcel Giraud for 4th in the league in wins. [10]

He fell to 3-3, 8.32 in '21. [11] Despite a rocky year, he made Germany's senior national team for the first time, in the 2021 European Championship. He did well, throwing three shutout innings. In the opener, he relieved Samuel Steigert with a 8-0 deficit in the 8th against Croatia. He got Antonio Horvatić, Andrew Jones and Mario Manojlov in order. His other outing, he relieved Lennard Stöcklin in the 5th with a 8-5 lead in the 5th against Ukraine. He allowed a double to Heorhii Hvrytishvili and a single to Denys Brechko but then got Kostiantyn Boiko, Serhii Tykhonets and Oleksii Boiko in order to end the inning. After Germany added a run for him in the bottom of the 5th, he again started an inning on a rough one. Illia Velykyi singled and Vladyslav Kosenko walked, then Kostiantyn Chukhas hit into a force. A walk to Dmytro Limarenko loaded them up but Wildenhain got Hvrytishvili to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Germany scored five more and Joe Cedano De Leon relieved with a 14-5 lead. [12]

In the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup, he allowed six runs (five earned) in four innings. [13]
