Biographical Information[edit]
Lennard Stöcklin has played in the Bundesliga and for the German national team, like his brother Jan-Niclas Stöcklin. [1]
He debuted in the Bundesliga-1 in 2010 with the Mainz Athletics, going 0 for 5 as a backup infielder the year he turned 17. [2] In '11, he was 3 for 15 with 3 walks, 5 runs and 3 RBI as a backup 3B/2B for Mainz. [3] In the 2011 European Junior Championship, he batted .269/.310/.500 with 3 triples, 5 runs and 6 RBI, fielding .926; he led the event in three-baggers. [4]
Stöcklin was a part-timer by 2012 at third base and produced at a .234/.333/.255 clip, handling 19 chances error-free. [5] He was the starter in 2013, hitting .206/.308/.255 and fielding .873. [6]
He made big strides in '14, when he batted .358/.376/.491 and fielded .963 while his brother was the staff ace. He finished 10th in the southern Bundesliga-1 in average (between Josh Petersen and Christoph Ziegler) and 8th with 38 hits. [7] In 2015, he was at .268/.383/.412 at the plate with 20 RBI in 28 games and .869 in the field. He was 7th in assists (68) but tied for 5th in errors. [8]
Lennard batted .295/.358/.324 and fielded .911 in 2016. [9] In the playoffs, he hit .308/.339/.365 as Mainz won the title. [10] In the 2017 European Champions Cup, he batted .263/.300/.316 for Mainz and handled 17 chances error-free. In the 7th/8th place game, he saved Tim Stahlmann's win over German rival Regensburg Legionäre with 3 1/3 innings and one unearned run only. He had given up four runs in his prior 1 1/3 IP in the event. [11]
He played one game for Germany in the 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week but did not bat. [12] In the 2018 Bundesliga, he slumped to .188/.264/.219 but began pitching regularly and did well (2-1, Sv, 1.93). He was 3rd in ERA (after Michael Click and Mike Bolsenbroek) and WHIP (1.10, trailing the same duo). [13]
In '19, he hit .229/.325/.257 and was at 3-1, 4.06 on the hill. [14] The next year, he was 2-0 with a 5.30 ERA and batted .243/.275/.297. [15] During 2021, he fell to 3-5, 7.21 but his offense rebounded (.408/.516/.592). He was 7th in IP (58 2/3, between Lukas Steinlein and Marcel Giraud) but allowed a league-high 90 hits and tied for 2nd in losses. Among players with 50+ plate appearances, he was 9th in average (between Danilo Weber and Gary Owens) and 7th in OBP. [16]
Stöcklin was then on the German squad for the 2021 European Championship. While his hitting had been much better than his pitching in '21, he was 0 for 3 on offense (backing up Eric Brenk at third) while he got a win on the hill. Relieving Steinlein with one out in the 2nd against Ukraine, the bases loaded and a 2-0 deficit, he allowed a sacrifice fly to Vladyslav Kosenko. Kostiantyn Chukhas singled to make it 4-0 then Dmytro Limarenko lined out. He allowed one run in the 3rd then pitched shutout ball in the 4th before Yannick Wildenhain took over with a 8-5 lead in place. [17]
