Biographical Information

Wilmer Ríos has starred in Mexico and for the Mexican national team.

He debuted with the 2014 Tigres de Quintana Roo, allowing one run in four innings. In '15, he had a 4-1, 2.23 record for them, with only 3 walks in 36 1/3 IP. In his Mexican Pacific League debut that winter, he went 2-0 with a 2.97 ERA for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. In 2016, he allowed two runs in five innings. He surrendered five runs in one inning in the winter of 2016-2017.

With the 2017 Tigres, he had a 1-3, 4.08 record, followed by a 1-1, 2.63 record in winter ball for the Naranjeros. The Mexican League went to a two-season format in 2018. He was 1-1 with a 6.92 ERA for the Acereros de Monclova in the spring and 6-1 with a 2.83 ERA in the fall; he walked 15 in 86 1/3 IP. In Hermosillo in 2018-2019, he was 2-1 with a save and a 2.43 ERA in 26 games.

The Guasave native was 7-5 with a 5.38 ERA for the 2019 Acereros. In the winter, he was 2-1 with a save and a 5.65 ERA in 24 outings. The 2020 LMB was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He then was 2-0 with a save and a 2.42 ERA for the 2020-2021 Naranjeros. In 2021, he had a 5-2, 4.70 record for Monclova. In the winter, he was used out of the Hermosillo bullpen after being a reliever the last couple winters and he went 6-3 with a 2.66 ERA, walking only 11 in 81 1/3 IP. He was one win behind LMP leader Elián Leyva. In the 2022 Caribbean Series, he went 6 2/3 shutout innings (3 H, 0 BB, 5 K) to defeat Porfirio López and the Caimanes de Barranquilla, 1-0; Enrique Burgos Jr. and Roberto Osuna completed the shutout.

Ríos was 9-4 with a 4.47 ERA for Monclova in 2022, tying for the LMB win lead. In the winter, he had a 9-2, 1.84 record with a .94 WHIP. He led the league in victories. The Cincinnati Reds signed him in early 2023. He was on Mexico's team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic but did not make it into a game. The Reds cut him in April, before he had pitched a game in their system. In the summer of 2023, he was 8-5 with a 3.39 ERA, walking 13 in 98 1/3 IP. He tied Raúl Carrillo for 5th in wins. The control specialist took time off to represent Mexico in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. He pitched five shutout innings (2 H, 2 BB, 3 K) before Fabián Cota relieved in a 4-0 win over Cuba and Carlos Viera. He then allowed one run in five to beat Venezuela's Sonny Vargas. He tied Eduardo Paredes, Hansel Paulino and Yoennis Yera for the event lead in wins, tied for second in IP (10, 2/3 behind Brayan Salaya) and was 4th in ERA (after Luis Miranda, Faustino Carrera and Paulino, who were at 0.00). Mexico won their first Central American and Caribbean Games Gold Medal in baseball, 97 years after their debut in the event, and he had a big part to play in it. They qualified for the 2023 Pan American Games; he remained with them for that event. Against host Chile, he went three hitless (walking José Hernández) before Carrera took over; it wound up as a combined no-hitter as he beat Emilio Germann-Cisterna. His magic run for the national team ended in the super round against Colombia when he allowed six hits and six runs (five earned) in two innings in a loss to Julio Vivas. Mexico won Bronze.
