Biographical Information[edit]
Sonny Vargas has pitched in the minors and for the Venezuelan national team.
He was signed by San Francisco Giants scout Edgar Fernandez late in 2017. [1] He was 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA, .211 opponent average and 1.04 WHIP for the 2018 DSL Giants in his pro debut. Coming stateside, he fell to 2-4, 5.03 with a save for the 2019 AZL Giants Black though his K rate ticked up (57 in 53 2/3 IP). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. In '21, he had a 5-5, 5.33 record for the ACL Giants Orange, striking out 69 in 54 innings. He tied Harold Galindo, Micah Kaczor and Martin Santana for 4th in the Arizona Complex League in wins and also tied for 4th in losses, while he tied Trevor McDonald for second in whiffs (one behind Esmerlin Vinicio).
Pitching for Venezuela in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, he tied in five games to tie Eduardo Paredes, Cesar Rosado, Miguel Rosario and Wuilder Rodríguez for the tourney lead as Venezuela won Bronze. He was 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. His loss came to Gold Medal winner Mexico in his lone start. Randy Romero reached on an error then he walked Norberto Obeso and allowed a RBI single to Fernando Villegas Jr.. After a passed ball scored another, Víctor Mendoza singled. Carlos Valero took over and let in a third unearned run. He did better in the Bronze Medal Game, going 2/3 shutout innings against the Dominicans as Venezuela won a spot in the 2023 Pan American Games. [2]
