Biographical Information[edit]

Norberto Obeso has played in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, the US and Canada and has been on the Mexican national team.

Obeso played one game but did not bat for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in his pro debut in the 2014-2015 Mexican Pacific League. He then signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Starting in left for the 2015 DSL Blue Jays, he hit .351/.470/.428 with 58 walks to 20 whiffs in 71 games, showcasing a great batting eye. He was one walk behind Dominican Summer League leader Ricardo Ferreira, was 4th in average (between Juan Rodriguez and Maiker Feliz) and ranked second in OBP (.043 behind Ferreira). [1] He made the DSL All-Star team. [2]

He came stateside in 2016 and batted .316/.442/.408 for the GCL Blue Jays with 31 runs in 44 games. He led the Gulf Coast League in OBP (.031 ahead of Juan Soto) and walks (29, 4 ahead of Randy Ventura and Anthony Dirocie). He was also 3rd in average, 4th in OPS (between David Jacob and Seamus Curran) and tied Kevin Vicuna for 6th in runs. [3] He was 3-for-12 with two walks, a homer and four runs for Hermosillo that winter.

Playing in his 4th country, he produced at a .252/.364/.329 clip for the 2017 Vancouver Canadians. His 34 walks were 5th in the Northwest League, between Ryan Kirby and Onil Pena. He saw limited time again in the winter - 3-for-21 with 3 walks. With the 2018 Lansing Lugnuts, he had 9 assists in the outfield against only two errors, but he eked out a .227/.318/.296 line as his production continued to fall. He saw increased time in the winter and hit .297/.391/.363 as the 5th outfielder for his hometown Naranjeros.

As a backup for the 2019 Dunedin Blue Jays, he hit .262/.341/.352 to end his time in the Jays chain. He was 0 for 3 with a walk in the Arizona Fall League. In 2019-2020, he hit .284/.376/.394 for Hermosillo, followed by .329/.397/.411 in 2020-2021. He was second in average (.010 behind Yadiel Hernández). [4] Making his Mexican League debut, he batted .243/.326/.355 for the 2021 Leones de Yucatán. He had another solid winter at .297/.398/.343 with 37 walks in 58 games. He was 4th in hits (between Yadir Drake and Japhet Amador).

With the 2022 Leones, he hit .316/.466/.373 with 50 walks in 68 games. He was 8th in the league in walks. He began the winter with Hermosillo but started slowly (.191/.306/.191 in 12 G) then was loaned to the Águilas de Mexicali. [5] He hit .190/.325/.232 with Mexicali, though, for a rough winter after a good summer. Back with the Leones for 2023, he hit .329/.463/.436 with 59 walks in 65 games. Despite his part-time role, he was 4th in the LMB in walks.

He also spent part of the year with the Mexican national team. In the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, he started in left and hit 2nd in their opener against Cuba. He flew out against Carlos Viera his first time up then singled in the third. For the Games, he was a solid 7-for-15 with 8 walks and 5 runs in 6 games, posting a batting line of .467/.652/.533 while playing error-free ball in left. Mexico won Gold, their first Gold in a major tournament, 97 years after taking Silver in their debut in the 1926 Central American Games. He tied Roderick Bernadina for 5th in average, was second to teammate Fernando Villegas Jr. in OBP, was 4th in OPS (between Yoelkis Guibert and Yasniel González) and led in walks (two ahead of Rubén Castro and Jesmuel Valentín). [6] Given that performance, he remained with them for the 2023 Pan American Games. He was at .250/.375/.350 in that event as Mexico won Bronze, scoring four runs in six games and drawing four walks while again making no errors in the outfield. He tied for 7th in runs and tied Xavier Batista for 4th in walks. [7]
