Biographical Information

Fabián Cota has pitched over 600 games as a pro (as of 2024), reaching AAA, and has been on the Mexican national team.

He was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Tomas Herrera in September 2010. He made his pro debut with the GCL Phillies, going 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in1 5 games. His winter league debut came with the Cañeros de Los Mochis; he was 1-0 with a save for his hometown squad but had a 5.91 ERA. In 2012, he went 0-4 with a 6.56 ERA as a LOOGY for the Acereros de Monclova (40 GP, 23 1/3 IP). In the winter, he struggled again (9.92 ERA). Cota was 3-2 with a 5.01 ERA for Monclova in 2013, then allowed five runs in 3 2/3 IP in winter ball.

Cota moved to the Diablos Rojos del México in 2014, going 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA as a swingman for the champs. He went 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA in the winter. In 2015, he was 2-0 with a 3.92 ERA for the Diablos Rojos, almost entirely in relief; he walked only 8 in 39 innings. He had a 2-1, 2.27 record for Los Mochis in 2015-2016, then was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in only 7 games for the 2016 Diablos Rojos. He did not pitch that winter; one wonders if he was injured. Returning to action in the summer of 2017, he was 2-1 with a save and a 4.76 ERA back in a LOOGY role (28 G, 17 IP). He was 1-3 with a 7.29 ERA for Los Mochis in 2017-2018.

The Mexican League went to a two-season format in 2018. He was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 20 games (11 1/3 IP) in the spring season and had a 5.02 ERA in 26 outings in the fall. Making 30 appearances for the 2018-2019 Cañeros, he was 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA. He went 3-0 with a 5.57 ERA in 2019, and 3-1 with a save and a 1.80 ERA in the winter, walking only 2 in 25 innings. His 35 games pitched tied him for 8th in the Mexican Pacific League. The Diablos Rojos dealt him to the Guerreros de Oaxaca along with Fernando Miranda, Gonzalo Sanudo, Kevin Medrano, Oziel Flores, Rigoberto Terrazas and Rogelio Martinez for Jonathan Partida and Julian Ornelas. The 2020 Mexican League season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was 3-3 with a 3.91 ERA for Los Mochis in 2020-2021.

He split 2022 between Oaxaca (3-2, 5.21 in 29 G) and México (one shutout inning). That winter, he was 2-2 with a 3.66 ERA for Los Mochis, walking 7 in 39 1/3 innings. In the playoffs, he saved Nick Struck's title-clinching win. He made his Caribbean Series debut, allowing one unearned run in 3 1/3 IP in the 2023 Caribbean Series. He tied for 9th in the event with four appearances. In the summer of '23, the veteran was 1-0 with a save and a 3.22 ERA in 25 games for the Diablos Rojos. He also pitched twice that year for the Mexican national team. In the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, he debuted in their opener, relieving Wilmer Ríos in the 6th with a 2-0 lead over Cuba. He retired Yoelkis Guibert then gave way to Alexandro Tovalín. He went 1-2-3 against the Dominican national team and allowed a run in an inning versus Puerto Rico. Mexico won their first baseball Gold, 97 years after their Central American and Caribbean Games debut. He tied for 8th in the Games in pitching outings. During the 2023 Pan American Games, he added a Bronze Medal, though he allowed two runs in his lone inning, against Panama.

In the winter of 2023-2024, he was 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA. He was then dealt by the Diablos Rojos with Luis Cessa to the Sultanes de Monterrey for closer Jake Sanchez.
