Biographical Information

Relief pitcher Steve Allen played in the minor leagues from 1988 to 1994. He spent two seasons at the Triple-A level, but never reached the majors.

Allen was drafted in the 20th round of the 1987 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs, however he did not sign. He was signed after being taken in the 37th round of the 1988 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers. The signing scout was Bob Lavallee.

He began his professional career in 1988, pitching for the Butte Copper Kings, going 2-2 with a save and a 9.32 ERA in 17 games (six starts). In 46 1/3 innings, he allowed 74 hits and 53 runs, while striking out 30 batters. He had the worst ERA in the 1988 Pioneer League for pitchers with 15+ IP.

The following year, with the Gastonia Rangers, Allen had a reversal of fortunes, going 6-2 with 3 saves and a 2.02 ERA in 51 relief appearances. He allowed only 60 hits and one home run in 89 innings, while striking out 84 batsmen. Along with Jim Hvizda (1.19) and Kyle Spencer (2.22), he gave Gastonia a great bullpen. In 1990, he went 8-4 with five saves and a 3.83 ERA in 53 relief appearances for the Tulsa Drillers. He struck out 84 batters in 89 1/3 innings. He was fourth in the Texas League in games pitched behind John Lepley, Terry Bross and Gab Ozuna. On December 30, he was traded with minor leaguer Dave Lynch to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Jim Poole.

In his first season in the Dodgers' system, 1991, he appeared in 12 games, going 1-0 with a save and a 4.43 ERA for the San Antonio Missions, striking out 25 batters in 20 1/3 innings. He went 5-2 with five saves, a 2.62 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 43 appearances for the Missions in 1992, with 64 strikeouts in 79 innings.

Allen began the 1993 season in the Dodgers system, pitching for the Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes. Not far into the season, he switched organizations and landed on the Colorado Rockies farm, pitching for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. In total, he pitched in 37 games on the season, going 6-4 with 2 saves and a 4.10 ERA.

He wrapped up his career in 1994, going 2-5 with two saves and a 6.69 ERA in 46 appearances for the Sky Sox, surrendering 109 hits in 75 1/3 IP.

Overall, Allen went 30-19 (.612 W%) with 19 saves in 260 appearances (seven starts). He had 375 strikeouts in 463 innings, a 1.44 WHIP and a 4.35 ERA.
