Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Dave Lynch spent 10 years in the minor leagues, including part or all of 8 seasons at Triple-A. He pitched more than half his games at that level, but never reached the major leagues.

He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 4th round of the 1983 amateur draft, a few picks after outfielder Ron Gant and one ahead of pitcher Pat Clements, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Texas Rangers in the 27th round of the 1987 amateur draft, a few picks after pitcher Kevin Bearse. The signing scout was Bill Schmidt.

He was 4-3 with a 2.29 ERA in 13 games (9 starts) for the GCL Rangers in 1987; in 55 innings, he allowed 38 hits and had 55 strikeouts. The next year, between the GCL Rangers (1 G) and Port Charlotte Rangers (36 G), Lynch went 6-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 37 relief appearances. He averaged more than a strikeout per inning. By 1989, he was in Triple-A, going 0-2 with a 6.17 ERA in 11 games for the Oklahoma City 89ers. He had a great year overall, however, as he spent most of the campaign at Double-A, going 8-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 37 appearances for the Tulsa Drillers; he was 8-2, 1.85 in 50 games as a whole. For the next couple seasons, Triple-A proved too much for him, as he had a 5.74 mark there in 1990 (4.41 ERA overall) and a 6.63 mark in 1991 (6.66 ERA overall). On December 30, 1990, he had been traded with fellow minor leaguer Steve Allen to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Jim Poole and cash.

He moved to the Cincinnati Reds system in 1992 and spent just a game at Triple-A. He was 3-1 with a 2.92 mark in 38 appearances overall. In 1993, he had his best year at the minors' highest level, going 9-4, 3.21 in 59 appearances for the Indianapolis Indians. His mark was 3.13 overall as he also spent a few games at Double-A. Pitching in the Cleveland Indians system in 1994 and 1995 (again at Triple-A), Lynch had ERAs of 4.68 and 4.30, respectively, going 3-9 in 71 total games. He moved to the Mexican League in 1996 to wrap up his career.

Stateside, Lynch went 38-33 with a 3.48 ERA in 350 career games (17 starts). In 524 2/3 innings, he allowed 485 hits and 242 walks, while striking out 462 batters. Excluding his time in the Mexican League, he was 13-22 with a 4.60 ERA in 189 Triple-A games.
