Biographical Information[edit]

Po-Chang Shen pitched in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Shen played for Taiwan when they won the Silver Medal at the 1995 World Junior Championship and for the Taiwan national team when they won Bronze in the 1997 Asian Championship. [1] He was 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA in four outings at the 1998 Baseball World Cup. [2] He won Bronze in the 1998 Asian Games. [3] In the 1999 World Port Tournament, he was 1-0 with a 4.55 ERA. [4] He pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings in the 1999 Intercontinental Cup and registered one save. [5] He also played in the 2001 World Port Tournament. [6]

The Uni-President Lions drafted him in the first round of the 2002 CPBL Draft and he began his CPBL career in 2002, going 0-3 with a save and a 4.35 ERA. He was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in 2003. In 2004, he allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings. He then had Tommy John surgery and missed 2005. [7] In 2006, he returned to post 12 holds and a 2.60 ERA in 32 games. In 2007, he was 1-2 with a save and a 2.79 ERA, again in 32 outings. In 37 games in 2008, he was 1-1 with a save, 14 holds and a 2.95 ERA. He led the CPBL in holds despite not making the top 10 in games pitched. [8] In 2009, his ERA rose to 7.28 ERA and he had one save. He struggled again in 2010 with a 7.50 ERA and 1.89 WHIP to end his career. Shen then became a coach. He coached for the National Taiwan University of Physical Education in 2013 and then coached for Chinese Cultural University. [9] He coached for Taiwan in the 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week. [10] He then coached for Taiwan in the 2018 Asian Games and the 2022 U-23 Baseball World Cup. [11]

He threw a fastball that only peaked around 87 mph, relying on a change-up, slider, curveball and knuckleball to complement it. [12]

Overall, Shen was 3-7 with 42 holds, 4 saves and a 4.67 ERA in 187 games in 8 seasons in the CPBL.
