Biographical Information[edit]

Nelson Alfaro has pitched regularly for the Salvadoran national team.

He won Bronze with El Salvador in the 2013 Central American Games, their first medal in the event in 12 years. [1] He won league MVP (6-2, 1.85) and finals MVP (2 W) in 2016. [2] When El Salvador made their first Bolivarian Games in 2017, he drew a tough assignment against Silver Medal winner Panama. He got a no-decision, working 3 1/3 IP and allowing seven hits, a walk and four runs (all earned) while striking out two. He tied Jairo Aparicio for the team's highest ERA. [3]

Alfaro also faced a tough opponent in the 2017 Central American Games, champion Nicaragua and former major leaguer Wilton López. He took the loss, going 3 1/3 innings again and giving up six hits, three walks and five runs (four earned) while whiffing one; Bernardo Moreno succeeded him. He did much better against Honduras, fanning ten in seven innings and allowing five hits, two walks and three runs (two earned) to beat Roberto Velasquez; Félix Rodas registered the save. He finished second in the round-robin phase in both innings (4 2/3 behind Guillermo Valdez) and strikeouts (two shy of Valdez). [4]

The 29-year-old was the lone southpaw on the Salvadoran squad for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games Central American Qualifier; El Salvador had already qualified for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games as host but were using this as a warm-up event. He pitched well in the opening loss to Costa Rica (5 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) but Pablo Barquero was sharper. He also started and got a no-decision against Honduras (5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K). He tied Alejandro Amézquita, Barquero, Darlyn Rodriguez and Ronald Medrano for the most starts in the event, was fourth in innings and was fifth in whiffs (between Rodriguez and Héctor Martínez).
