Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Guillermo Valdez has represented Guatemala. In the 2013 Bolivarian Games opener, he tossed 2 2/3 hitless innings to wrap up a combined shutout with Gustavo Rehwoldt versus Ecuador. In the semifinals, he tossed a gem against highly-favored Venezuela, throwing 7 shutout innings but being matched by Carlos Mory. He allowed a run in the 8th but Mory gave up one in the 9th. Valdez allowed one more in the 11th to lose in a fine game.

He was 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, leading Guatemala in IP (9 2/3, 3 1/3 ahead of #2 Rehwoldt), hits allowed (14) and strikeouts (5; no one else had more than two) but not in runs (he was 3rd) or walks (tied for 5th) despite his workload. His ERA was much better than the team total of 9.49. He again excelled in a start against Venezuela, leading 2-1 after six before Wilmer Alvarado homered, Rafael Rivas walked, Douglas Landaeta tripled and Rodolfo Cardona singled to make it 4-2.

In the 2017 Central American Games, he was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA, beating Honduras in the opener and losing to El Salvador; Guatemala got the Bronze Medal. Valdez led the round-robin phase in IP (15, 4 2/3 ahead of Nelson Alfaro), strikeouts (13, 2 more than Alfaro) and starts (2, tied with Alfaro and José Díaz.

His brother Juan Valdez, has been a teammate on Guatemala's national team.
