Biographical Information[edit]
Pablo Barquero has pitched for the Costa Rican national team.
He debuted for Costa Rica in the 2017 Central American Games, closing out a 11-1 loss to Panama; relieving Cristian López, he allowed two hits and a run in a third of an inning. He was far better his other outing, outdueling Denis Díaz of Honduras; he allowed three hits in five shutout innings and Víctor Torres took over with a 2-0 lead but his team couldn't hold on. The teenager led his team in ERA, 1.31 ahead of #2 Alberto Cabrera. [1]
Barquero came to the US for college. He was 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA and 84 K in 81 2/3 IP at Eastern Florida in junior college in 2019. [2] He was 0-1 with a 29.70 ERA in three games for Georgia State in 2020 and 0-1 with a save and a 13.50 ERA in 2021. Transferring again, he was 11-0 with a 2.85 ERA for Reinhardt University in 2022. Only Kobe Foster had more wins in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
With Costa Rica for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games Central American Qualifier, he was excellent. He and López teamed on a two-hitter to beat Nelson Alfaro and El Salvador in the opener. In the Bronze Medal Game, he pitched 8 shutout innings to beat Alejandro Amézquita and Guatemala. While Ronald Medrano was named the event's All-Star SP, Barquero made leaderboards for wins (tied Medrano for #1), starts (tied for first with Darlyn Rodríguez, Medrano, Amézquita and Alfaro), IP (1st, 3 2/3 ahead of Amézquita), walks (9, 1st, 2 more than David García) and strikeouts (17, tied Medrano for first). He had the best ERA (0.60) of any hurler who allowed an earned run. [3]
