Missouri Western State College was a two-year college known as St. Joseph Junior College from 1915 to 1969. The school became a four-year college in 1969 and became a full member of the State of Missouri system in 1977, known as Missouri Western State College. On August 28, 2005, the name changed to "Missouri Western State University" due to a state law changing the institution's name.
