Biographical Information[edit]

Michael Brettell peaked at AA and has pitched for Team Canada.

He allowed three runs in 2/3 of an inning in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, losing to Cuba and Yosimar Cousín. [1] He came to the US for college, going 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA as a freshman and 6-5, 4.26 as a sophomore. He was 3-3 with a 4.74 ERA for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod League then posted an identical ERA and a 6-7 record as a junior in college. The St. Louis Cardinals chose him in the 15th round of the 2018 amateur draft and he signed for a $125,000 bonus.

The right-hander struggled in his pro debut for the Johnson City Cardinals, going 1-3 with a save, 8.78 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. Moving up to the Peoria Chiefs in 2019, he improved a bit to 5-10, 5.76. He tied for 4th in both the Midwest League and Cards chain in losses. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he toiled for Peoria (1-0, 2.84 in 4 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (1-5, 7.97 in 23 G). He was 5-3 with a save and a 5.58 ERA for Springfield in 2022. He tied Grant Black for 4th in the Cards chain with 45 appearances and tied Jake Haberer for 5th in the Texas League in that department.

Brettell opened 2023 with the Palm Beach Cardinals (0-1, 4.32 in 6 G). Released, he was signed by the Les Capitales de Québec. He only made four appearances for them (8 R, 7 ER in 4 IP; 1-1) before joining Canada for the 2023 Pan American Games Qualifier. His debut went well, as he succeeded Phillippe Aumont in the 6th with a 4-4 tie against Panama. He went 1-2-3 against Carlos Sánchez, Eduardo Thomas Jr. and Jason Patterson. In the 7th, he struck out Abraham Rodriguez, walked Luis Castillo and got Jhadiel Santamaría to fly into a double play. After Canada scored twice, RJ Freure came in and saved the win for Brettell.
