Marty DeMerritt was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 1971 amateur draft and played 8 seasons in the minors for the Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Houston Astros.
DeMerritt was head coach at Lowell High School in 1982, then began his pro coaching career with the San Francisco Giants organization in 1983 and he has also applied his trade in the Far East, coaching pitchers in Korea.
DeMerritt was pitching coach of the Clinton Giants in 1983, Fresno Giants in 1984-1985, Shreveport Captains in 1986-1987, and Phoenix Firebirds in 1988-1989. In mid-September of 1989 he joined San Francisco as an interim bullpen coach and stayed with the team through the playoffs and 1989 World Series. He left the Giants organization in 1990 for South Korea where he worked as the pitching coach for the Samsung Lions. DeMerritt returned to the U.S. in 1991 and was out of baseball for the early part of the season. The Giants rehired him in early June as an assistant bullpen coach when the pitching staff was really struggling. DeMerritt left the Giants organization after that season.
DeMerritt worked for three more organizations before landing with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays where he currently coaches. He joined the Florida Marlins organization in 1992 and served as the pitching coach for the Erie Sailors in 1992, High Desert Mavericks in 1993, and Portland Sea Dogs in 1994. His next move was to the Chicago Cubs where he was the pitching coach for the Orlando Cubs in 1995-1996 and Iowa Cubs in 1997-1998. He returned to the major leagues for the last time in 1999 as the Chicago Cubs' pitching coach. DeMerritt then spent one season with the Pittsburgh Pirates as their minor league pitching coordinator.
He has been in the Devil Rays/Rays chain since 2001. He was the pitching coach for the Bakersfield Blaze from 2001-2004, Visalia Oaks in 2005-2006, Princeton Devil Rays in 2007, and Princeton Rays from 2008-2011. DeMerritt was the GCL Rays pitching coach from 2012-2019. He was slated to return in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the minor league season. MLB renamed the Gulf Coast League the Florida Complex League in 2021 and DeMerritt served as the pitching coach for the FCL Rays in 2021-2023.
DeMerritt also worked for many years on off-season leagues. He served as a pitching coach in the Arizona Fall League with the Tempe Rafters in 1993 and Mesa Saguaros in 1996. He worked for several years in Venezuela as well.

The Parallel League in the winter leagues is a development league for players who have been drafted by their respective teams, but are not yet ready to play with the parent team.
DeMerritt goes by the nickname "Dog" and is a huge fan of Hulk Hogan.
