Biographical Information[edit]
Keith Madison pitched as high as AAA and then was a college coach.
Madison was signed by the Montréal Expos out of high school as an undrafted free agent. He split the summer of 1970 between the GCL Expos (2-0, 1.29 in 5 G) and the Watertown Expos (0-2, Sv, 8.64 in 18 G). In 1971, he was with Watertown (1-2, 2 Sv, 4.78 in 16 G) and briefly with the AAA Winnipeg Whips (0-3, 7.36 in 7 G, 16 BB in 22 IP). He injured his shoulder and was let go by the Expos. [1] He signed with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1972, he had a 2.70 ERA and no decisions in 16 games for the Tampa Tarpons. Back with the same club in '73, he was 6-5 with 12 saves and a 3.29 ERA. He was 8th in the Florida State League with 43 pitching appearances and tied Leonard Yonkman for 4th in saves. Among Reds farmhands, he tied Rawly Eastwick for 4th in games pitched and was second in saves, two shy of Manny Sarmiento. [2] In 1974, was with the Tarpons (2-0, Sv, 1.89 in 11 G) and Trois-Rivières Aigles (1-2, 4.61 in 23 G) before a knee injury ended his playing career. [3] He had gone 12-14 with 16 saves and a 4.32 ERA in 139 minor league games. In 246 innings, he allowed 225 hits and 133 walks while whiffing 176.
Keith was coach at Lake Wales High School for two years then was graduate assistant at Mississippi State University. From 1979-2003, he was head coach at the University of Kentucky. He won 737 games at Kentucky. [4] He coached Jim Leyritz, Terry Shumpert, Brandon Webb and Joe Blanton among others at Kentucky.
