Team History

For a two-year span (1970-1971) the Winnipeg Whips were the AAA farm club of the Montreal Expos. In 1972, the team moved to Virginia and became the Peninsula Whips. Winnipeg started the 1970 season as the Buffalo Bisons but moved during the year due to poor attendance in Buffalo, NY. The team played in the International League. Despite 2 last place seasons, the team finished first in attendance in both seasons. The team moved after the 1971 season due to travel difficulties (the Toledo Mud Hens, 1,108 miles away were the closest team). The Whips played in Winnipeg Stadium, a football stadium built for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League but that also hosted the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League from 1953 to -1964 and later from 1994 to 1998.
