Biographical Information[edit]
Juan Casas played in the minors and for the Peruvian national team.
Casas played for Tronconero 1 (VSL) in the 2004 Venezuelan Summer League. He had two saves and a 4.63 ERA in 9 games for the 2005 VSL Phillies, striking out 13 but walking 8 in 11 2/3 IP. In 2006, he was 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA for the VSL Pirates with 38 K in 31 IP, improving his control (11 BB). Like many Venezuelans of the period, he left the impoverished and dangerous land for a neighboring country, moving to Peru and becoming a citizen there. [1] He played for Peru in the 2019 Caribbean Baseball Cup. [2]
He was with Peru for the 2022 South American Championship, the team's second-oldest player after Ken Ishihara. While Peru had several Venezuelans on their team in recent years, he was one of the first Peruvian national team players to have minor league experience; Cuban defector Kenny Rodriguez was one. He batted fifth and played DH in their opener against Bolivia. His first time up, he singled off Cristian Choque to drive in José Salas. His first pitching appearance was very good as he fanned 10 in five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) in an even duel with Juan Borras of defending champion Argentina, before being relieved by Marco Castellano]. He finished the event at .313/.381/.421 with two runs and three RBI in six games, posting a 1.75 ERA and fanning 13 in 8 innings but getting no decisions. He tied Sebastián García and Rider Zevallos for 9th in the event in hits (6; only Susumu Yoza had more for Peru), tied for second in doubles (2, one behind Osvaldo Carvalho Júnior), tied Diego Echeverría and Javier Wong for the most games pitched and tied Orlando Leon for the most batters whiffed.
