Biographical Information[edit]
Joseph Boyce has pitched for the New Zealand national team, as has his brother Jimmy Boyce.
To develop his baseball game, Boyce came to the US from New Zealand to play high school ball. He was the second-youngest Kiwi to play in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, behind Makauley Fox-Rolfe. On the other hand, Boyce's 54.00 ERA tied Landon Adelman for the worst on New Zealand. In his first game, he relieved Adelman in the 5th with two on, no out and a 4-0 deficit against host Taiwan. He walked Cheng-Ming Peng then gave up a 2-run single to Chih-Sheng Lin. Boyce retired Ssu-Chi Chou and Hung-Yu Lin (the latter by strikeout), but then walked Yen-Wen Kuo intentionally and allowed a 3-run double to Yung-Chi Chen, after which Wayde Bremner relieved. In his other outing, he relieved Nick Dawson with a 10-4 8th-inning lead over the Philippines with two on and two out. He walked Jonathan Laygo and gave up a 2-run single to Devon Ramirez before Lincoln Holdzkom was summoned to replace him.
In his lone game, he relieved Andrew Marck in the top of the 4th with a 3-3 tie and one out in a win-or-go-home game against the Philippines. He retired Joshua Wong and Jonash Ponce. In the 5th, he walked Adriane Ros Bernardo and gave up a double to Eric Farris but struck out Matt Vance. Nick Maronde relieved and let one of the inherited runs score, but New Zealand rallied for a 17-7 win, Joseph's brother Jimmy getting the decision.
