Biographical Information[edit]
Ji-hyuk Ryu has played in the Korea Baseball Organization.
Ryu represented South Korea in the 2011 BFA U-18 Baseball Championship, and he was drafted by the Doosan Bears in the 4th round of the 2012 KBO draft. He went 1-for-1 in his first season, then he missed the next two seasons due to military service. Ryu mainly stayed in the minors in 2015 as he only played 14 games with the big club, and he hit .288/.356/.407 in 90 games in 2016 as an infield utility man. He then recorded a .259/.317/.360 batting line in 2017, and he represented South Korea in the 2017 Asia Professional Baseball Championship. Ryu was 1-for-1 with a double against Katsuki Matayoshi of Japan in the 10th inning, then he drew a walk against Kai-Cheng Wang of Chinese Taipei. In the Gold Medal Game, Ryu was 1-for-3 with a single against Kazuto Taguchi, but Japan still beat South Korea and won Gold.
The Seoul native played 128 games with a .268/.372/.311 batting line in 2018, and he hit .250/.323/.286 with 18 steals in 2019. The Bears then traded him to the KIA Tigers for Geon-hui Hong on June 7, but he then injured his left foot 7 days after being traded. His season ended due to that injury, and he ended up hitting .381/.440/.524 in 25 games in the '20 season. Ryu played 92 games with a .278/.385/.330 batting line in 2021, and he was named the starting third baseman of the Tigers in 2022. He was selected into the 2022 KBO All-Star Game, but he was 0-for-5. Ryu ended up hitting .274/.369/.346 in 2022, and he had a .268/.355/.305 batting line in 2023 before the Tigers traded him to the Samsung Lions for Tae-gun Kim. Ryu batted .268/.326/.315 for the Lions, and he was 4th in steals (26, tied with Hae-min Park, Min-woo Park and Soo-haeng Jo). He then went 1-for-3 in the 2024 KBO All-Star Game, and his batting line was .258/.341/.325 with 11 steals in 2024.
