Biographical Information[edit]
Jake Dahlberg has pitched in the minor league and the CPBL.
Dahlberg was a three-sport athlete in high school, making All-State in baseball. He was 4-2 with a 2.25 ERA at Mt. Hood then transferred to Illinois-Chicago. He had a 8-2, 3.31 record as a sophomore, finishing third in the Horizon League in ERA and winning the league's Pitcher of the Year. He fell to 6-8, 5.35 as a junior but rebounded to 10 wins and a 2.09 ERA as a senior. He led the league in wins, ERA and opponent average (.164) and was again the loop's Pitcher of the Year. He finished second in school history in K (209) and tied for 3rd in wins. [1]
He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 21th round of the 2017 Amateur Draft. He had a 4.96 ERA in 19 relief outings for the Johnson City Cardinals in 2017, then he had a 2.15 ERA in 9 games for the State College Spikes in 2018. Dahlberg reached class A the same year, and his ERA was 2.87 in 7 games with the Peoria Chiefs. He was released by the Cardinals in March 27, 2019, and he joined the Chicago Dogs of the American Association. He was 9-6 with a 4.49 ERA in 2019 (tying for 7th in the league in wins), then slumped to 4-4 with a 5.52 ERA in 2020.
The southpaw improved to 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 2021 with the Dogs. Therefore, the San Francisco Giants offered him a minor league contract in 2021, and he recorded a 6.60 ERA in 10 games with the A+ Eugene Emeralds. He pitched for the Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Winter League after this season, but he allowed 3 runs in 2 2/3 innings. He then went 5-7 with a 4.31 ERA for the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels in 2022, then the Giants released him. Dahlberg returned to the Dogs in 2023, and he had a 6.16 ERA in 6 starts in 2023.
When the Rakuten Monkeys of the CPBL lost Bryan Woodall, they selected Dahlberg to replace him. He was 6-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 2023 CPBL, and the Monkeys advanced to the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series. As their closer Bradin Hagens struggled late in the season, Dahlberg was named their closer in the postseason. He notched a save with a shutout inning in Game 1, then he collected another save as he threw 2 shutout innings with 2 strikeouts in Game 2.
In the 2023 Taiwan Series Game 1, Dahlberg relieved Chih-Hsuan Wang in the 9th inning, and he struck out the first three batters he faced (Cheng-Lin Jan, Namoh Iyang, Giljegiljaw Kungkuan). He then surrendered a single to Tien-Hsin Kuo, struck out Chi-Hung Liu then Kai-Wei Lee singled to sent Kuo to third. Dahlberg fanned Ngayaw Ake and retired Shao-Hung Chiang to end this inning, but the Monkeys still lost due to Liu's walk-off home run. He then pitched a shutout inning to notch a hold in Game 1 , and he got a save with another shutout inning in Game 3. The Monkeys then named him their starter in Game 7, but he faced severe command problems. Dahlberg walked 5 of 8 hitters he faced, and his forcing Kuo to ground into a double play was the only way he got to two outs. Jen-Ho Tseng replaced him after he walked Chiang, and the Monkeys were beaten by the Wei Chuan Dragons. He joined the Fubon Guardians in 2024.[2]
