Biographical Information[edit]

Jae-il Oh won a Korean Series MVP.

Oh was 0 for 1 for the Hyundai Unicorns in 2005 then spent three years in the minors. He was with the Nexen Heroes in 2009, hitting only .197/.260/.303 then was 8 for 60 with 4 doubles, a homer and four walks in 2010. In 2011, he hit .230/.333/.310 in 46 contests. He opened 2012 with Nexen then was traded to the Doosan Bears; for the season, he produced at a .203/.235/.354 clip in 87 games. He was a solid bench player for the Bears in 2013 (.299/.406/.479 in 144 PA over 55 G). In Game 2 of the 2013 Korean Series, he entered in the 9th inning as a defensive sub at 1B. In the 13th inning, with a 1-1 tie, he faced Seung-hwan Oh, a two-time Series MVP with a 1.30 ERA and no postseason losses coming in. Jae-il Oh promptly took his fellow Oh deep, giving Doosan a win.

Despite his 2013 postseason heroics, he didn't become a regular in 2014, hitting .242/.342/.364 with again three homers. In 2015, the 28-year-old was a superb part-timer (.289/.387/.594, 14 HR in 180 AB); Doosan then won the 2015 Korean Series. That finally earned him a starting job over a decade after his debut; in 2016, he produced at a .316/.411/.592 clip with 27 homers, 92 RBI and 64 walks. He tied Jae-gyun Hwang, Eui-yoon Jung and Seung-yeop Lee for 8th in the league in homers, tied for 7th with 7 sacrifice flies, was 5th in slugging (between Wilin Rosario and Jung Choi) and was 7th in OPS (between Ji-wan Na and Choi). In Game 1 of the 2016 Korean Series, his 11th-inning sacrifice fly off Chang-yong Lim ended a scoreless game, scoring Kyoung-min Hur with the winner; Doosan won the Series again.

Oh remained steady in 2017: .306/.378/.561, 26 HR, 89 RBI. He was 9th in slugging, between Darin Ruf and Roger Bernadina and tied Na for 9th in OPS. In Game 1 of the 2017 Korean Series, he and Jae-hwan Kim hit back-to-back homers, the 8th time that had happened, but the Bears fell to the KIA Tigers.

In 2018, he fell off slightly to .279/.373/.539 with 27 homers and 80 RBI. He was 8th in walks (60). He was only 2 for 16 in the 2018 Korean Series as Doosan lost to the SK Wyverns. Oh's batting line in the 2019 KBO finished at .293/.369/.495. He hit 29 doubles and 21 homers, scored 76 and drove in 102. The veteran tied Sung-yeol Lee for 8th in circuit clouts, was 4th in RBI and ranked 9th in slugging (between Baek-ho Kang and Ha-seong Kim). In the 2019 Korean Series, he made up for his 2018 Series woes. In Game 1, his single off Kiwoom Heroes closer Ju-won Oh scored Kun-woo Park with the winner in the bottom of the 9th. In Game 2, he hit a two-run homer. In Game 4, his double off Yong-chan Lee in the 10th brought in Geon-chang Seo with the winner to complete a sweep. He won Korean Series MVP, having hit .333 with six RBI in four games, including two game-winning hits.
