Biographical Information[edit]

Jacobo Meque peaked at AAA.

Meque signed originally with Baltimore Orioles scout Carlos Bernhardt in July 2000. He spent 2001 in the Dominican Summer League. In 2002, he was 2-4 with a 2.86 ERA for the GCL Orioles, striking out 56 but walking 33 in 50 1/3 IP. He was 4th in the Gulf Coast League in strikeouts, behind Merkin Valdez, Elizardo Ramirez and Angel Garcia and tied for third in walks. Despite an overall solid season, Baltimore let him go in June of the next year. He quickly signed on with the Cincinnati Reds and spent the summer of 2003 in their chain, appearing for the GCL Reds (1 R in 4 IP). He was 1-1 with a 4.56 ERA and 36 walks in 49 1/3 IP for the 2004 Billings Mustangs. He tied for 8th in the Pioneer League in free passes.

Jacobo next saw action in 2006, with the Vermont Lake Monsters (2-3, 2 Sv, 5.13 in 17 G, 20 BB, 34 K, 8 WP in 26 1/3 IP) and Savannah Sand Gnats (2-2, 4 Sv, 11.49, 2.43 WHIP). He tied for 10th in the New York-Penn League in wild pitches. Signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers next, he pitched in 2007 for the Inland Empire 66ers (5-2, 4 Sv, 4.72, 42 BB, 70 K, 10 WP, .223 opponent average in 55 1/3 IP). The wild lefty was second in the LA chain in pitching appearances (behind Casey Hoorelbeke) and tied for second in the California League in that department, one shy of leader Josh Giles.

In 2008, Meque was sharp for Inland Empire (1-0, 7 Sv, 2.40 in 14 G) and the Jacksonville Suns (2-1, 5 Sv, 3.55, 39 K in 33 IP). He allowed a .215 average between the two stops, with just a single home run, and was a non-roster invitee to the Dodgers' spring training the next year. '09 was not as good for the San Cristobal native - he struggled with Inland Empire (1-3, Sv, 5.14 in 20 G) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (1-4, 10.81 in 10 G); he allowed a .328 average and 27 walks in 31 2/3 IP for a 2.27 WHIP.

Jacobo pitched for the 2011 Vaqueros de Laguna but did not do well (0-1, 6.75, .366 opponent average, 13 BB in 18 2/3 IP) for a second straight 2+ WHIP season. He was with the Dominican national team for the 2011 Baseball World Cup but struggled in both outings, allowing two runs and two hits (to Max Kepler and Chris Howard) in one inning against Germany (the other Dominican hurlers gave up two hits and no runs in six innings) and 3 walks and an unearned run in 1 1/3 IP versus Australia. For the tournament, he had four walks, four hits and three runs (two earned) in 2 2/3 IP. He was removed from the Dominican roster for the 2011 Pan American Games, while most of the team remained the same as that used in the World Cup.
