Biographical information[edit]
Carlos Bernhardt was a Baltimore Orioles coach in 1998 and is currently the team's director of Latin American scouting. The brother of Juan Bernhardt and Jose Bernhardt, and uncle of Cesar Bernhardt and Josephang Bernhardt, Carlos has spent over 20 years in baseball.
At the age of 14, Bernhardt broke Felipe Alou's Dominican record for javelin tossing. He debuted in professional baseball as a pitcher in 1969 with the Newark Co-Pilots, appearing in 10 games as a reliever with a 3.60 ERA. He pitched in the Dominican League that winter. He signed with the New York Yankees and pitched for the 1971 Fort Lauderdale Yankees, allowing 16 hits and 10 runs (7 earned) in 7 innings over six games. He broke his arm in the Venezuelan League that winter and retired in 1973.
Bernhardt worked 13 years as the Scouting Supervisor for the Baltimore Orioles in the Dominican Republic, signing over 250 players. He has coached for the Estrellas Orientales. From 1994-1997 and in 1999, he managed the DSL Orioles, wrapped around his one-year stint as a coach for the major league team.
From 1999 through the present (2007), he has been director of Dominican scouting for the Orioles once again.
