Biographical Information[edit]
Jack Tighe was a long-term minor league player and manager. He is not to be confused with Jack Tighe, a major league manager.
Tighe hit .240 and slugged .349 for Danville in 1892, playing mainly second base. He hit .305/?/.429 with 98 runs and 11 triples in 97 games for the 1893 Scranton Miners. He tied Willie Clark, Doc Potts, Bobby Rothermel and Charlie Nyce for 8th in the Pennsylvania State League in triples. With the 1894 Pottsville Colts, he hit .370, slugged .565, scored 117 runs and cracked 35 doubles and 14 home runs. In a high-offense season, he was 5th in the PSL in average (between Bill Massey and James Graham), tied for 8th in runs, was second to Potts in doubles and was third in home runs (behind Henry Cote and Nyce). He split 1895 between Pottsville (42 for 79), the Rochester Browns (.260/?/.347 in 33 G) and Titusville then played in 1896 for Dubuque.
Now playing first base, he hit .287/?/.375 for the 1897 New Bedford Whalers. He split 1898 between the New Britain Rangers, New Bedford/Worcester (.278/?/.424 in 38 G) and the Fall River Indians (16 for 48, 2B). He hit .324 while bouncing around the New England League in 1899 and tied for fifth with 7 home runs. He spent 1900-1901 with the Norwich Witches. In 1900, he batted .324 with 25 doubles, 66 runs and a .425 slugging percentage. He was third in the Connecticut State League in hits (behind Danny Murphy and the ageless Jim O'Rourke), was 5th in doubles, was 8th with 156 total bases and made the top 10 in average. He hit .249 and slugged .312 for the 1902 Norwich Reds. With the Reds in '03, the veteran infielder batted .271 and slugged .371. With the Deadball Era, those numbers weren't bad; in fact, he led the Connecticut League with his five home runs. He split 1904 between Norwich (.287 in 36 G) and New Bedford (.241 in 23 G).
Tighe hit .293 for Norwich in 1905 and managed them for part of the year. He fell to .242 in 1906 while serving as full-time skipper. He batted only .189 for the 1907 Rock Island Islanders to wrap up his playing career. He managed Rock Island from 1908-1910, the Louisville Colonels for part of 1912 and Rock Island again in 1917 and for part of 1920.
