The International League and its precursors have almost always had a team in Rochester, NY. A rare break came from 1892-1894, after the end of the Rochester Hop Bitters. Rochester returned in 1895 with the Rochester Browns. They finished 7th in the league (then known as the Eastern League) and tried four different managers, who compiled a 47-82 record. The managers were Jack Chapman, Tim Shinnick, Pete Sweeney and Tun Berger. One bright spot was the hitting of OF Billy Lush (.347, .572 SLG, 28 triples, 105 R, 22 SB, one off of the league lead in triples). OF Sun Daly (.346, .462 SLG, 110 runs) led the EL with 191 hits. George Harper amazingly went 24-21 and led the league in games pitched (48), starts (45), complete games (43), innings (395), hits allowed (461), walks (146) and strikeouts (233). His 2.26 ERA was fourth in the league.

In 1896, the Browns finished in third at 68-58 under Dan Shannon's guidance. 1B Charles Dooley (.329, .502 SLG) led the league with 46 doubles and SS Ollie Beard (.347, 106 R) and Daly (.341) led in average. Rochester led the league in hits (1,421), doubles (264) and triples (91) while batting .296 as a club. The team became the Rochester Blackbirds in 1897.
