Biographical Information[edit]
Charles Dooley was a minor league manager and player.
Dooley began his career as a pitcher in 1885, going 5-9 between four different teams. He went 1 for 25 for the 1886 Binghamton Crickets and was 1-4 with a 4.12 ERA for Bradford in 1887, but hit .335 as a part-time outfielder. He would spend the rest of his career at first base. He fell to .210 for the 1888 Galveston Giants and .208 for the 1890 Jersey City Jerseys. He played in the California League from 1889-1892. He batted .324 in 20 games for the 1893 Troy Trojans; he also appeared for the Augusta Electricians that year.
Charles split 1894 between the Nashville Tigers and Detroit Creams. He led the Eastern League with 46 doubles in 1896, hitting .329 for the Rochester Browns. He also had 18 triples, 15 steals and 95 runs. No other Il player had even 40 doubles that year. In 1897, he hit .299 with 13 triples for the Rochester Blackbirds/Montreal Royals, followed by .317 for the 1898 Royals and .285 for them in 1899, then .279 in 1900. He rebounded to .298 in 1901 then batted .252 for the Montreal clubs in '02, his last season.
He also served as manager of the Montreal Royals from 1897-1902. He won a pennant with the club in 1898 when it played in the Eastern League. He also guided the 1907-1910 Utica Utes.
