Biographical Information[edit]

Ivan Arteaga played 9 seasons in the minors and has coached 24 minor league seasons (through 2024).

Ivan signed with the Montréal Expos in 1989, and went 5-2 for the DSL Expos from 1989-1991. He did not pitch in 1992. He split 1993 between the Burlington Bees (6-5, 2.83) and West Palm Beach Expos (0-3, 8.04). He was 7th in the Midwest League in ERA. The Expos then dealt him with Rodney Pedraza to the Colorado Rockies for Freddie Benavides.

Arteaga spent both 1994 and 1995 with the New Haven Ravens. He was 8-9 with a 3.48 ERA the first year, allowing only 123 hits but 70 walks in 150 innings. He fell to 2-4, 5.56 the second season, then missed two years due to injury. Returning to action in 1998 with the New York Mets organization, Ivan was a reliever for the St. Lucie Mets (2-1, 5.17) and Binghamton Mets (2-1, Sv, 4.74).

In 1999, Arteaga had a 10-5, 3.71 season for the Elmira Pioneers. He was 10th in the Northern League's Eastern Division in ERA. Ivan ended his playing career in 2000 with Elmira (6-2, 3.02) and the Oaxaca Warriors (1-2, 15.00).

Arteaga joined the coaching ranks in 2001 as the pitching coordinator at the Minnesota Twins' Venezuelan Academy where he stayed through 2005. In 2004 he also served as the DSL Twins pitching coach. Arteaga moved stateside in 2006 as pitching coach for the GCL Twins and continued in that role through 2011. After that his teams changed more frequently. He was pitching coach for the Elizabethton Twins in 2012, Fort Myers Miracle in 2013, Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2014, Fort Myers again in 2015, and Chattanooga Lookouts in 2016-2018. After the 2016 season Arteaga coached pitchers for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League.

Arteaga moved to the Miami Marlins' chain as pitching coach of the DSL Marlins in 2019. He was scheduled to return to that role in 2020 before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In 2020 Arteaga was also appointed to the position of Latin American Pitching Coordinator for the Marlins, a role he repeated in 2021. In 2022-2023 Arteaga was the Marlins' Latin American Player Development Coordinator. He returned to coaching pitchers in 2024 with the FCL Marlins.

In addition to his work with the Twins and Marlins, Arteaga has extensive recruiting, development, and coaching experience in Venezuela and the Venezuelan League.[1] He started as the Coordinator of Player Development for the Navegantes del Magallanes in 2004-2005. In 2012 Arteaga joined the Bravos de Margarita as the Director of Player Personnel where he focused upon recruiting future players for the team. This position lasted into early 2015 when Arteaga took on other responsibilities. From April 2015 through February 2017 he served as the Coordinator of Player Development. Simultaneously, Arteaga worked was a Special Assistant to the General Manager, a position he held from April 2015 through most of 2019.

Also in 2015, Arteaga started coaching for the Bravos. On November 10th he replaced bench coach Julio Vinas who had to leave the team due to other commitments. Arteaga returned as bench coach during the 2016/2017 season. The next year he assumed the pitching coach role for the Bravos and remained there through 2021/2022. After a season away from the Venezuelan League, Arteaga was named the pitching coach for the Caribes de Anzoátegui in 2023, but was fired on November 17th.

Lastly, Arteaga was the pitching coach for Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
