Biographical Information[edit]

Freddie Benavides was signed by scouts Tony Robello and Chuck LaMar for the Cincinnati Reds as a 2nd round pick in the 1987 amateur draft. He played four seasons in the big leagues as a utility infielder, logging time on the inaugural Colorado Rockies squad in 1993 and spending his final season with the best Montreal Expos team in history, the 1994 iteration. In 219 games, he batted .253 with 4 home runs and 53 runs scored.

A few years after completing his playing career, Benavides joined the Cincinnati Reds player development staff. Benavides managed the Clinton LumberKings in 1999 and the Dayton Dragons in 2000. He was the Cincinnati Reds minor league infield coordinator beginning in 2001, while also serving as a coach for the Reds for two months in 2003 and GCL Reds manager in 2004. Benavides was named the Reds minor league field coordinator in 2008 and remained in that role through 2013.

In 2016, he was appointed first base coach of the Reds after having been a special coach in 2014 and 2015 with responsibilities for infield defense. In 2019, he became the bench coach for newly-appointed manager David Bell and remained in this position through 2024. That year, on September 22nd, Bell was fired with the Reds having failed to take a step towards contention as expected, and Freddie was named as his interim replacement to finish out the season as manager, with his first game at the helm coming two days later. The Reds lost four out of five games during his tenure. Less than a week after the end of the season, news came out that the Reds had convinced Terry Francona to come out of retirement to take over as the team's manager in 2025
