Biographical Information

Julio Vinas spent five full years at AAA but never made the majors.

Vinas hit .556 as a high school senior, winning All-State honors. The Chicago White Sox took him in the 33rd round of the 1991 amateur draft; he was their lowest pick to sign that year. He hit .225/.300/.321 in his pro debut for the GCL White Sox, playing primarily first base. In 1992, he was a 1B-C for the Utica Blue Sox (.245/.296/.338) and South Bend White Sox (.170/.245/.202). By 1993, he was a full-time catcher, appearing for South Bend (.319/.360/.553) and the Sarasota White Sox (.246/.300/.354). In 1994, the 21-year-old's batting line read .253/.318/.382 for Sarasota, while he set career highs in runs (68) and walks (43).

Julio batted .269/.337/.371 for the 1995 Birmingham Barons, backing up Scott Vollmer at catcher. In '96, the Miami native hit .237/.311/.399 for the Nashville Sounds; with the same club the next year, he did just about as well (.232/.289/.389). Moving on to the Baltimore Orioles chain in 1998, he hit .352/.388/.558 in 62 games for the Rochester Red Wings, as an excellent DH.

Vinas had perhaps his best season in 1999, again with the Red Wings, at .312/.342/.510 with 32 doubles, 20 homers and 83 RBI (the latter three all career highs). He was 11th in the International League in average; Luis Raven beat him out as the All-Star DH. Vinas led O's farmhands in hits (151), total bases (247) and doubles, tied Wady Almonte for the most RBI was one home run behind leader Ryan Minor.

In 2000, the veteran played for the Cleveland Indians' Akron Aeros (.254/.385/.381) and the Boston Red Sox' Pawtucket Red Sox (.252/.316/.411). It was the only time in his last six seasons that he saw time at AA in addition to AAA. He ended up back with Rochester for 2001 but was well past his prime (.218/.283/.331). In 896 minor league games, his batting line was .264/.322/.411.

He coached in the Orioles chain from 2002-2009, spending five seasons as the organization's hitting coordinator.
