Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Wady Almonte played eleven professional seasons, most of them in the Baltimore Orioles chain. He began his career in 1994, playing for the GCL Orioles. He was not impressive, hitting only .200/.256/.267. He remained in the Rookie league the next season, this time moving onto the Bluefield Orioles. There was a 107 point swing in his batting average, ending '95 at .307/.338/.476.
Proving he was ready for a higher level, he was in advanced A ball in 1996. He hit .286/.348/.466 for the Frederick Keys; he played one game with the GCL Orioles, as well. He split 1997 between Frederick and the AA Bowie Baysox. He hit .257/.320/.490 at A+ and .207/.306/.338 at AA. 1998 was nit kind to Almonte, as he only appeared in seven games at Bowie, hitting only .048/.231/.190. 1999 was a bounce-back season, however. Still at AA Bowie, he posted numbers of .293/.341/.471.
He moved to the AAA level in 2000, spending the season with the Rochester Red Wings. In his first season with Rochester, he hit .262/.298/.397. He spent 2001 with Rochester, as well, but regressed to .215/.260/.294.
The O's gave up on Almonte, and he moved to the St. Louis Cardinals system. He began 2002 with the AA New Haven Ravens, but his struggles continued and he only was able to manage .188/.220/.208 averages. The Cardinals released him and he finished the '02 campaign with the independent Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. In 85 games with Long Island, he hit .286/.330/.448. He split 2003 between Long Island and the Cordoba Cafeteros of the Mexican minors. With the Ducks, he hit only .211/.250/.298 in 16 games, but with Cordoba, he accumulated averages of .331/.375/.438. He spent 2004 back in the indies, this time in the Northeast League. Playing for the New Jersey Jackals, he hit .327/.388/.514, but decided to hang 'em up at season's end.
