Biographical Information[edit]

Hyoun-taek Oh has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization and was the top hurler in the last Baseball World Cup.

Oh made his KBO debut in 2009 with the Doosan Bears. He had a 4.45 ERA and no decisions in 17 games. In 2010, he was 1-0 with a 6.46 ERA in 12 games for Doosan. In the 2011 Baseball World Cup, he starred for the South Korean national team. In his first outing, he appeared in relief for Chang-ho Lee against Venezuela with a 4-4 tie in the 8th, two on and two out. He promptly allowed a game-losing single to Jonathan Sivira. He tossed eight shutout innings (4 H, 12 K) against an Australian national team with two ex-major leaguers in the lineup to beat Clayton Tanner; Hyun-jun Lim finished up the shutout.

Oh's next start was against Italy and he again dazzled, with 14 whiffs in 7 2/3 innings; he allowed five hits, a walk and no runs. This time, three relievers completed the shutout. Against Team Canada, he had a fine pitching duel with Andrew Albers. He left with no outs in the 5th inning, with 8 strikeouts, 5 hits, no walks and no runs allowed. Reliever Sung-hoon Choi let inherited runner Jonathan Malo score, handing Oh the loss as Canada got a whitewash. In the 7th/8th place game, he tossed two shutout innings of relief in a 3-2 Korean loss to Australia.

For the 2011 World Cup, Oh was 2-1 with a 0.40 ERA. He struck out 35 and walked one in 22 2/3 innings. The only run he gave up scored when a relief pitcher was on the hill. He easily led the Cup in whiffs. He was named the All-Star starting pitcher for the Cup, winning out from a crowded field which had strong performances from Albers, Miguel Lahera, Ryan Searle, Tom Stuifbergen, Mario Alvarez, Rob Cordemans, Juan Carlos Sulbaran, Shairon Martis, Drew Smyly, Andy Van Hekken and Julio Rodriguez among others.
