Biographical Information

Clayton Tanner was drafted in the third round of the 2006 amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants. He was signed by scout Keith Snider and began his professional career that season. He was ranked a top-30 prospect in the Giants system five times by Baseball America, but never played in the majors for them.

With the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2006, Tanner went 2-2 with a 3.46 ERA in 13 relief appearances. In 2007, he went 12-8 with a 3.59 ERA in 27 games (23 starts) for the Augusta Greenjackets. He pitched for the San Jose Giants in 2008 and 2009, going 10-8 with a 3.69 ERA in the former year and 12-6 with a 3.17 ERA in the latter. In 2010, he pitched for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, going 9-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts. He began 2011 in the Giants system, but was released toward the end of the season and signed on with the Cincinnati Reds. In 22 starts with Richmond, he was 6-10. In a single game with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, he had a 0.00 ERA.

Though he didn't pitch professionally stateside in 2013, Tanner was on Australia's roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. In 2014, he was 5-6 with a 5.13 ERA for the independent Amarillo Sox and Lancaster Barnstormers. He was back with Amarillo in 2015 and went 0-3 with a 6.49 ERA in seven starts. With the Pittsburg Mettle in 2016, he was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in a single start.

At all levels, Tanner went a combined 58-57 with a 4.12 ERA in 210 games (151 starts).
