Biographical Information[edit]
Herbert Lara was a minor league outfielder.
Lara was signed by Minnesota Twins scout Jose Leon in January 2006. He hit .286/.392/.342 as a utility man for the 2006 VSL Twins/Blue Jays. With the 2007 VSL Cubs/Twins, he batted .300/.411/.354 and stole 16 bases in 20 tries. He was 9th in the Venezuelan Summer League in OBP and tied for 9th in steals. Starting in left field for the 2008 GCL Twins, Lara hit .281/.333/.349. He eked out a .218/.288/.349 line for the 2009 Elizabethton Twins. In 2010, he played for the independent Tijuana Cimarrones (.324/.375/.378 in 11 G) and Yuma Scorpions (.294/.357/.373 in 30 G). He was 23 for 52 with 4 doubles, 2 homers, 12 steals and 11 walks in just 12 games for the 2011 Las Cruces Vaqueros.
Lara hit .296/.345/.333 for the Venezuelan national team in the 2011 Baseball World Cup, with 7 runs and 7 RBI in 11 games. He stole 3 bases in 4 tries. Going into the final games, he was tied Sharlon Schoop, Kalian Sams, Joe Thurston and Juan Carlos Infante for third in the event in swipes, one behind Jordan Danks and Skyler Stromsmoe. In the 7th/8th place game, he was 1 for 5 with a double, run and two RBI from the leadoff spot as Venezuela beat host Panama, 8-3. He was 0 for 7 with two walks and a run in the 2011 Pan American Games, splitting left field with Arturo Rivas.
He hit .407/.407/.444 as Venezuela's DH in the 2013 Bolivarian Games, with five runs and four RBI in seven games. He led the team with 11 hits. In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he led Venezuela with 7 hits, batting .389/.421/.445; he also had two assists, one each from LF and CF. He was 8th in the event in average, between Carlos Quiroz and Edgar Muñoz.
