Biographical Information

Harry Saferight played in the 1968 National Junior College World Series with Manatee Community College, then known as Manatee Junior College. Four other men on that team made it to the majors: Dave Moates, Johnny Grubb, Ron Cash, and Mac Scarce. The Lancers finished second.

After transferring to Florida State University, Saferight also got to play in the 1970 College World Series. Dave Moates, who was a year ahead, had jumped from FSU to the pros, but joining Harry again were Grubb, Pat Osburn, Cash, and Scarce. The Seminoles lost in the final, a 15-inning battle against the University of Southern California, featuring Dave Kingman, Jim Barr and Brent Strom.

Saferight was drafted four times before he finally turned pro. In his ninth year in the minors, he made it to the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979 but failed to appear in a game. He was the on-deck batter on three different occasions but all three times the Pirates' batter made the third out of the inning to deny him a time at bat. His teammate Gary Hargis almost joined him as a "phantom major leaguer", but was used once as a pinch runner in extra innings of the Pirates' penultimate game that season. Saferight did make it onto a baseball card, appearing on the "Pirates Future Stars" card in the 1980 Topps set.

Saferight remained in Triple-A through 1982 and then retired.
