Biographical information

Shortstop Héctor Gómez reached the majors in 2011 with the Colorado Rockies.

Gómez began his professional career in 2005 after being signed at age 16 by scouts Rolando Fernandez, Felix Feliz and Frank Roa. That year, the youngster hit .335/.423/.483 for the DSL Rockies though he was just 15-for-27 in steal attempts. He tied for 6th in the Dominican Summer League in batting average and was named the All-Star shortstop, joining Everth Cabrera as the middle infielders honored.

He split 2006 between the Casper Rockies (.327/.364/.485 in 50 games) and Tri-City Dust Devils (.244/.255/.311 in 12 games), hitting a combined .312 in 62 games. He finished 10th in the Pioneer League in average. Baseball America rated him the league's #3 prospect (behind Bryan Morris and Josh Bell and just ahead of Sean O'Sullivan and Gerardo Parra) and #15 in the Rockies chain. He did not win All-Star honors as Chris Valaika was picked at short.

In 2007, he played for the Asheville Tourists, hitting .266/.309/.421 with 34 doubles, 8 triples, 11 home runs, 89 runs and 20 stolen bases in 30 tries in 124 games. He was the youngest player named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team, picked alongside Emmanuel Burriss in splitting the vote at shortstop. Baseball America rated him as Colorado's #4 prospect and best defensive infielder prospect. They also ranked him as the #2 prospect in the SAL behind only Desmond Jennings; following him were Fautino de los Santos, Lars Anderson and Chris Marrero.

He played in only one game in 2008, for the Modesto Nuts, collecting one hit in three at-bats before a leg injury ended his season prematurely. With the Nuts in 2009, Gómez hit .275/.310/.423 with six triples in 83 games, missing two stretches due to injury. Baseball America dropped him to #5 in ranking the Rockies' prospects and he did not make their top-20 list for the California League.

Gómez played in only 27 games in 2010, split between the Tulsa Drillers and Tri-City. He came back the following year, hitting .235 with 14 home runs in 102 games for Tulsa before earning a September call-up with the Rockies.
