Biographical Information

Pitcher Bryan Morris reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012.

Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the third round of the 2005 amateur draft, Morris did not sign and instead attended Motlow State Community College, where his father Avery was an assistant coach. After going 10-1 with a 0.82 ERA and 122 strikeouts there, he was then chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Marty Lamb and made his pro debut that year, going 4-5 with a 5.13 ERA in 14 starts for the Ogden Raptors. However, following that season, he had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, and missed the entire 2007 campaign.

Morris came back in 2008, starting the year with the Great Lakes Loons and going 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 17 starts. On July 31st, he was acquired by the Pirates as part of a three-team, six-player trade that sent Jason Bay to the Boston Red Sox and Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers. Pitching for the Hickory Crawdads after the deal, he went 0-2 with a 5.02 ERA in 3 starts. He missed the first two months of the 2009 campaign following shoulder surgery and then went 4-9 with a 5.57 ERA in 15 starts for the Lynchburg Hillcats. Morris began 2010 with the Bradenton Marauders and posted a 3-0 record and 0.60 ERA in 8 starts. He was promoted to the AA Altoona Curve, for whom he was 6-4 with a 4.25 ERA in 19 outings. As a late injury replacement, he also pitched in the 2010 Futures Game. Replacing Shelby Miller in the seventh with the US up 6-1 and two outs, he retired Curve teammate Gorkys Hernandez, the only batter he faced; he was relieved by Anthony Slama in the eighth. Back with Altoona in 2011, he was converted to a reliever in June after going 1-3 with a 6.04 ERA in 6 starts; after the move to the bullpen, he went 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA and 3 saves in 29 appearances.

Morris started the 2012 campaign with the AAA Indianapolis Indians and was 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA and 5 saves in 46 games for the club. He was called up to the majors by the Pirates on June 24th, when Jordy Mercer was sent down to the minors, but was sent back to Indianapolis the next day, when Jeff Karstens was activated from the disabled list, before he could make a big league appearance. He was back with Pittsburgh as a September call-up, and made his major league debut on September 14th, against the Chicago Cubs, throwing a perfect inning of relief work. He stuck around Pittsburgh until 2014, dealt to the Miami Marlins for a supplemental draft pick, and finished his career with a brief stint with the San Francisco Giants in 2017.
