Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Greg Nappo has played as high as AAA.

Nappo had a 6-5, 2.93 record as a high school junior and 7-1, 1.74 as a senior. He was 4-3 with a 3.50 ERA as a freshman at UConn but was redshirted in 2008. In 2009, he was 3-4 with a 6.06 ERA. As a redshirt junior in 2010, he improved to 8-5, 4.44. He tied for 4th in the Big East Conference in wins. He followed with a 5-1, 1.64 summer for the Haymarket Senators of the Valley Baseball League with 68 K in 49 1/3 IP. As a senior for the Huskies, he was 10-3 with a 2.63 ERA. He tied Justin Amlung for second in the Big East in wins, one behind teammate Matt Barnes. He beat Sacred Heart University and Clemson University in the 2011 NCAA Regionals to win MVP of the regional pool. He was the 4th UConn hurler to win double-digit games in a year, following Colin McLaughlin, Tom Germano and Barnes (who got there earlier in 2011). He finished second in UConn history with 25 wins, one behind Germano and one ahead of Barnes. He was also 3rd with 15 losses, first with 53 starts, first with 311 1/3 IP and 6th with 215 strikeouts.

He was taken by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round of the 2011 amateur draft. The scout was Steve Payne. He posted a 3.44 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched his first campaign, split between the Jamestown Jammers (4 H, 3 BB, 22 K, 0 R in 14 IP) and Greensboro Grasshoppers (4-1, 4.61 in 9 G). He had a 2.77 mark and .201 opponent average with 103 Ks in 78 innings pitched his second year, spent with the Grasshoppers. He played in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game that year and on April 24, he took part in a no-hitter against the Hickory Crawdads. Jose Fernandez started the game and was relieved by Nappo, who went two innings and was relieved by Kevin Cravey.

In 2013, he had a 1.11 ERA in 38 games, excelling for the Jupiter Hammerheads (5-1, Sv, 1.15 in 36 G, 56 K, 9 BB in 55 IP) and New Orleans Zephyrs (0 R in 2 IP). He played for the Jacksonville Suns (2-0, Sv, 1.74 in 34 G) and Zephyrs (1-0, 5 R in 5 IP) in 2014, with a 0.92 WHIP and 2.44 ERA on the year. Nappo split 2015 between Jacksonville (3-0, 2.04 in 10 G) and New Orleans (2-3, 2.66 in 33 G) again, this time spending more of the time in AAA. He struck out 68 and had a 1.03 WHIP in 65 innings. Through 2015, he was 21-9 with a 2.47 ERA, .207 opponent average and 329 K in 306 2/3 IP as a pro, with a WHIP a tad over 1.

He then took time to represent the Colombian national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in March 2016. He made his debut in the opener against Spain, relieving Angel Vilchez in the 6th with two on, two outs and a 5-2 lead. He walked Daniel Martinez to load the bases but retired Yasser Gomez. In the 7th, he retired Luis Guillorme, walked Oscar Angulo and got Yunesky Sanchez to hit into a double play. Horacio Acosta relieved him in the 8th. He also pitched in the finale against host Panama; relieving Yesid Salazar in the top of the 6th with a 1-0 deficit, he retired Jonathan Saavedra, gave up a single to Carlos Ruiz and whiffed Javy Guerra before Vilchez relieved; Colombia rallied for a 2-1 win to go to the 2017 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic.
