Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Grant Holmes was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers and scout Lon Joyce in the first round of the 2014 amateur draft with the 22nd overall pick, after having the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in South Carolina. He signed for $2.5 million and made his pro debut that summer with the AZL Dodgers. He also pitched for the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League that season, going 2-3, 3.72 in 11 games (10 starts). In 2015, he was with the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League where he went 6-4, 3.14 in 24 starts. He logged 103 1/3 innings and struck out 117 opponents. In 2016, he was assigned to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League and was 8-4, 4.02 in 20 games. On August 1st, he was one of three prospects sent by the Dodgers to the Oakland Athletics to acquire P Rich Hill and OF Josh Reddick; accompanying Grant were Jharel Cotton and Frankie Montas. He then went 3-3 in 6 games for the Stockton Ports, still in the California League, to finish with an overall mark of 11-7, 4.63 in 26 games.

Things continued to go well for him in 2017, when he was promoted to the AA Texas League and went 11-12, 4.49 with the Midland RockHounds. However, a shoulder injury limited him to just 2 starts back at Stockton in 2018, and almost upended his career beyond repair. While he made one start for the AAA Las Vegas Aviators in 2019, the rest of his season was spent back at Midland, where he was 6-5, 3.31. But he then lost another year when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues in 2020, then had a tough year for Las Vegas in 2021, when he was 1-2, 8.01 in 37 games, being moved to the bullpen after being torched as a starting pitcher. He did not look like much of a prospect anymore at that point and his career hit a low point on July 28th the following year when the Athletics released him after he had gone 1-2, 8.27 in 28 games for Las Vegas. But the Atlanta Braves had seen something they liked in him in spite of the stratospheric ERAs: they signed him on August 13th, and had him pitch three games for two low-level affiliates while trying to fix whatever was preventing him from harnessing his talent.

Things turned around for Grant in 2023 when he had a solid season for the AAA Gwinnett Stripers, going 7-3, 3.54 with 13 saves in 50 games. In 2024, he was 3-2, 2.63 in 18 games for Gwinnett when he got the call to the majors that he had been waiting for for years. He made his debut on June 16th by pitching 3 scoreless innings of relief in an 8-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
