Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth has reached the AAA level.
As a freshman at Western Michigan University, Hollingsworth went 9-3 with a 3.21 ERA. He tied for second in the Mid-American Conference in wins and was named MAC Freshman of the Year and an All-Star starting pitcher. He had a 4-4, 2.55 record as a sophomore, leading the team in ERA. After posting a 3.84 ERA and 5-5 won-loss record as a junior, he was again All-Conference. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the 2008 amateur draft (between Trevor May and Ryne White); the scout was Mike Garlatti.
Making his pro debut with the 2008 Casper Ghosts, he bombed at 4-7, 6.10 with a .325 opponent average. He tied for third in the Pioneer League in losses. He was sharper in 2009 with the Asheville Tourists (5-6, 4.05) and Modesto Nuts (3-3, 4.83). He tied Esmil Rogers for third in the Rockies chain in hits allowed (164) but was third in strikeouts (132, behind Christian Friedrich and Cory Riordan). He spent most of 2010 starring for Modesto (12-8, 3.31, 153 K, 34 BB in 160 1/3 IP) and also got into two games for the Tulsa Drillers (15 H, 13 R in 10 1/3 IP). He tied Juan Nicasio for the most whiffs by a Rockies farmhand and was second to Nicasio in strikeouts (by 9). He tied Nicasio and Oliver Odle for the California League lead in wins, was second to Anthony Bass in ERA and was third behind Nicasio and Shawn Haviland in strikeouts. He was left off the league All-Star team as Haviland, Bass and Eric Surkamp were the starters selected.
Prior to the 2011 season, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics for Clayton Mortensen. He pitched for the Midland RockHounds (6-5, 3.61) and Sacramento River Cats (1-0, 5.06) that summer. Following that campaign, he was dealt to the Kansas City Royals for Kila Ka'aihue. He pitched for the 2012 Northwest Arkansas Naturals (3-8, 4.17) and Omaha Storm Chasers (2-3, 6.44, .357 average). He was 6th in the Royals chain in losses, 3 behind leader Noel Arguelles. After the 2012 season, he was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the AAA phase of the 2012 Rule V draft.
On July 25, 2013, while pitching for the Altoona Curve, Hollingsworth combined with Jason Townsend, Jhonathan Ramos, and Ryan Beckman to throw a no-hitter against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Hollingsworth pitched the first four innings, with only a hit batsmen (Adam Loewen) ruining perfection on his part. It was the second no-hitter in Altoona history, 11 years after Adrian Burnside, Neal McDade and Chris Spurling had combined for the first one.
