Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Shawn Haviland began his professional career in 2008. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 33rd round of the 2008 amateur draft, two picks after pitcher Shawn Armstrong.
He reached Triple A for the first time in 2010 and reached that level multiple times in subsequent years, but through 2016 has yet to appear in the major leagues. In 2010, he led A's farmhands in 169 K (20 ahead of Dan Straily) and was second in the the California League with 166 strikeouts (6 behind Juan Nicasio). He was also 5th in the Cal League with a 3.65 ERA that year. The hurler, prone to high ERAs, went 6-12 with a 7.08 ERA in 27 starts for the Midland Rockhounds in 2011; that began a six-year stretch, running through 2016 (he did not play in 2013) in which he did not have a winning season. He was 30-45 (.400 winning percentage) in that time.
Despite his poor pitching, he was an All-Star twice and pitched in the Arizona Fall League, usually a post-season designation for top prospects, in 2012. The lone postseason All-Star nod came in 2010 when as noted above, he was one of the top Cal League pitchers in both strikeouts and ERA, making it a reasonable selection.
He was signed by scout Marc Sauer.
Haviland's grandfather, Clayton, played baseball at Cornell University. His father, Tim, played at University of Connecticut, and his brother, Jordan, followed him to Harvard [1].
