Biographical Information

Minor League outfielder Ender Chavez is the younger brother of Endy Chavez. Although there are some similarities between the two brothers, such as the fact that they are both left-handed hitters and throwers, play the outfield and have little power, Ender has never been considered a prospect on the level of his older brother. He does not have quite the same speed or ability to steal bases, and has not been able to put up consistently high batting averages.

After signing his first professional contract with the Colorado Rockies in 1998, Ender Chavez began his career with two seasons in the Venezuelan Summer League in 1999 and 2000, then moved to the United States in 2001 where he hit .342 in 64 games for the Casper Rockies of the Pioneer League. After the season, he was sent to the New York Mets as the player to be named later in a trade which had brought catcher Gary Bennett to the Rockies on August 23. However, Chavez failed to progress after that nice start, and after the 2003 season, he was left exposed in the minor league portion of the 2003 Rule V Draft, having hit a combined .232 for three Mets Class A affiliates. He was selected by the Montreal Expos, whose General Manager, Omar Minaya, is probably his brother Endy's biggest supporter.

Ender Chavez was sensational in his first 20 games for the Brevard County Manatees in 2004, putting up a .380 batting average with 11 walks, but he was cut down by a season-ending injury. He stayed with the organization even though in 2005 the team moved to Washington, Minaya left to become the General Manager of the New York Mets, and his brother Endy was traded to the Phillies. He played in 112 games for the Potomac Nationals of the Class A Carolina League that season, hitting .251. In 2006, he reached the AA level for the first time - at age 25 - after starting the year with Potomac.

He played for the Brooklyn Cyclones and St. Lucie Mets in 2007, hitting .170 for the former and .279 for the latter. In 2008, he played for the Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League, hitting .400 in 10 at-bats.

Chavez was a Venezuelan-area scout for the New York Mets in 2010. He was a hitting coach for the DSL Mets 2 in 2011-2012, GCL Mets in 2013-2015, Kingsport Mets in 2016-2017, and Columbia Fireflies in 2018. He moved up to the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2019 as their bench coach. Chavez finally reached the major leagues in 2020 when the Mets promoted him to serve as the team's batting practice pitcher. He returned to the minors in 2021 as a bench coach for the FCL Mets where he was paired with his brother Endy on the coaching staff.

Chavez moved to the Washington Nationals organization as the FCL Nationals hitting coach in 2022-2024.
