Biographical Information[edit]

Darwin Peguero reached AA as a player, going 30-36 overall, then coached.

Peguero made his pro debut in 1996 with the DSL Astros/Red Sox, going 3-4 with a 2.14 ERA. He allowed 38 hits in 59 innings but walked 29. His 2010 Rays Media Guide bio lists him as making the Dominican Summer League All-Star team, but the 1997 Baseball Almanac does not concur. In 1997, the southpaw came stateside with the GCL Astros and going 0-4 with a 5.57 ERA, walking 23 and fanning 36 in 32 1/3 innings.

He was an All-Star with the 1998 Auburn Doubledays, helping them win a share of the New York-Penn League title. He was 5-4 with a 2.80 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings. He was only third on a high-whiff staff in strikeouts, trailing Tim Redding's 98 and Johan Santana's 88. He did have a better K/IP rate than either of those guys and had a better rate and more K than a third future major league star, Roy Oswalt.

Darwin fell to 7-7, 4.11 with the 1999 Michigan Battle Cats, then was 3-4 with a 3.13 ERA in a return engagement with the club in 2000. In 2001, the Hato Mayor native was 8-10 with two saves and a 4.05 ERA for the Lexington Legends. He struck out 134 in 124 1/3 innings. He led Astros farmhands in losses that year.

In 2002, Peguero was 3-2 with a save and a 4.48 ERA in 54 games for the Round Rock Express; he led the team in appearances in his lone stint in AA. In 2003, he moved to the Canadian Baseball League, posting a 5.16 ERA for the Saskatoon Legends. The next year, he was 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. He wrapped up his playing career with 20 games for the Newark Bears, going 1-0 with a 4.29 ERA but walking 15 in 21 innings.

Peguero was pitching coach of the 2005-2008 DSL Devil Rays/DSL Rays, 2009-2011 GCL Rays, and 2012-2013 Princeton Rays. Moving to the Arizona Diamondbacks' chain, he was pitching coach of the Missoula Osprey in 2016. Moving again, this time to the Houston Astros' organization, Peguero was pitching coach of the DSL Astros Orange in 2017 and DSL Astros in 2018. He was pitching coach of the DSL Giants Orange in 2023.
