Category talk:Minor League Players

From BR Bullpen

Love the sorters on the pages where you can jump to a certain alphabetical section of the category. It makes it much easier for large categories. - --Mischa 20:34, 25 May 2006 (EDT)

Whenever I use them, it logs me out as a user. wierd --Just me 23:05, 25 May 2006 (EDT)

Not sure where to put this but complete minor league rosters from 1900 to 1910 are available here (compiled by Marc Okkonen for a SABR project). They could be useful. --MichaelEng 00:46, 4 July 2006 (EDT)

Eventually (probably a few years from now) I think there should be a page for each minor league team for each year with a complete roster. We've got bigger fish to fry first. - --Mischa 10:07, 4 July 2006 (EDT)

We're up to 500 players. Lots of room to expand but that's a pretty impressive start given how many major leaguers, Negro Leaguers, NPBers, etc. still need bios. Nice mix of regular minor leaguers, celebrities in other fields, current prospects, former prospects, etc. - --Mischa 17:48, 23 July 2006 (EDT)

A minor league database has been posted here (zip).

From readme:

"These Lahman-style/Lahman-compatable CSV files contain the actual minor
league Batting, Fielding and Pitching records of all major league
players who played in 1951 or debuted between 1948 and 1973.

The team and leagues are the actual minor league teams and leagues.
There is a Team affiliationï CSV file that includes the Lahman style
abbrev for the major league organization these teams were under. IND
means the team was independent.

The file also includes 545 Japanese, Negro League and lifetime minor
leaguers and their actual records as close as I could find. There is a
dearth of fielding records for Japanese/Negro league players so in many
cases the fielding records are merely averages based on the records I
could find for those players/years."

It looks to be very complete; although the NPB fielding stats look faked and the batting and pitching stats look awfully familiar. Mischa, did you ever get a chance to look at that Frank Hamilton database? --MichaelEng 22:30, 17 September 2006 (EDT)

I can send you the Hamilton one as I never got a chance to review it. The NPB stats are available elsewhere, but it's nice to have much of the minors in one source. BTW, Michael, I now have 1966 Central League fielding stats available if you want them. - --Mischa 08:27, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

Hey Mischa, would you mind forwarding it to me too? --Just me 20:06, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

Ronald Williamson[edit]

Ronald Williamson, Oakland A's farmhand of the 1970s, is about to become well-known as a result of a new book by famous author John Grisham. Someone ought to consider adding him to this section. I am new to the whole Wiki concept, and I haven't had a chance to read the book yet. Once I become familiar with both subjects, I can make an attempt at adding him.

I will add the page and provide the stats and a little bit more. Once somebody has read the book (I'm no fan of Grisham), they can liven it up a lot. - --Mischa 07:16, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Into 3rd place, passing Stub (6,219-6,216). Nice to see stub out of the top 3 for the first time since the Bullpen really got going 5 years or so back. It was three years from fourth place to third place and it will be a while till this category moves up further - Player is at 17,645 and Images of baseball cards at 7,075. - --Mischa 20:49, 3 August 2011 (EDT)

Stephen Piscotty brings us to 7,000. Still averaging about 1,000 a year - --Mischa 14:47, 4 July 2012 (EDT)

Think it's #2 now with 7,641. Images of baseball cards is at 7,474. -Chisoxfan (talk) 01:34, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Though stub got a huge boost over the weekend. I'll try to fill those in if and when time allows. - --Mischa (talk) 11:10, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Up to 8,000 with the addition of Henry Cabrera - --Mischa (talk) 12:16, 10 October 2013 (EDT)

Edgar Leyva brings us to 9,000. - --Mischa (talk) 16:29, 28 April 2015 (EDT)

Question[edit]

Why are major league categorys singular (Player, Coach, Manager), while minor league categories are plural (Minor League Players, Minor League Coaches, Minor League Managers)? -Chisoxfan 15:00, 13 December 2007 (EST)

Beats me. - --Mischa 15:19, 13 December 2007 (EST)

I wondered the same thing --Jeff 15:52, 13 December 2007 (EST)

How much of a nightmare would it be to fix? Any way to do it other than going in and manually changing them all? -Chisoxfan 15:56, 13 December 2007 (EST)

Sounds like a BOT project to me. --Jeff 16:00, 13 December 2007 (EST)

22 players whose surnames start with Q, 6 for X, 50 for Z. - --Mischa (talk) 20:44, 21 August 2013 (EDT)

Up to 10,000 players with Wilkel Hernandez - --Mischa (talk) 17:04, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

A major milestone! Of course, this category sheds some names every summer as players make it to the Show, but it keeps on growing any way. --Philippe (talk) 20:53, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Only took 3.5 years, but we made it from 10,000 to 11,000 names in this category, with the great Mike Serbalik being #11,000. Alexsautographs (talk) 23:24, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

The pace may be slowing a little on this category but it's still hitting new milestones! - Mischa (talk) 09:48, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

We dropped below 11,000 just to make it back to that mark with Darrin Hursey. Alexsautographs (talk) 18:41, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

We usually lose some during the MLB season as prospects get called up, but we took a big hit when many Negro Leaguers who played in Mexico or post-integration minors got recategorized as MLB players and lost their Minor league player tag..ex. Willie Wells, Wild Bill Wright, Rufus Lewis - Mischa (talk) 18:57, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Still just back to 11,000 with Gabriel Lino! Should add some ground this off-season as no one will move off this category. - Mischa (talk) 16:31, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Jhonkensy Noel is the 12,000th entry here. - Mischa (talk) 16:18, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
