Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Darren Hursey played in the Detroit Tigers system from 1986 to 1991 and in independent ball in 1994. He was taken in the 17th round of the 1986 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of future major leaguer Dennis Moeller.

At 17 years old, he went 5-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 66 2/3 rookie ball innings in 1986, then he was 11-8, 3.11 in 25 games (23 starts) in 1987. He peaked before he was even 20 years old, going 15-8, 2.39 in 26 starts for the Single A Lakeland Tigers in 1988. After falling to 8-13, 3.97 in 1989, he rebounded to 5-5, 3.12 in 89 1/3 innings in 1990. Coming out of the bullpen in 1991, Hursey had a 5.16 ERA in 35 appearances. He did not play professionally in 1992 or 1993, but returned to with the indy Saskatoon Riot in 1994, going 2-0, 2.82 in 14 games (1 start).

Including his independent league stats, Hursey went 48-39 with a 3.30 ERA in 165 games (101 starts) overall.
