Yerzy was MVP of the Under Armour All-American Game in 2015, hitting a big homer. [1] He hit .154/.290/.269 for Canada in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup. [2] The Arizona Diamondbacks took him with the 52nd pick of the 2016 amateur draft, their second-round pick after Anfernee Grier went in round one. He was the second Canadian drafted that year, after Paul Quantrill. He had a scholarship offer to the University of Notre Dame but turned it down to sign. [3] The scout was Dennis Sheehan. [4]
He split his first pro summer between the AZL Diamondbacks (.196/.220/.255 in 27 G) and Missoula Osprey (.250/.274/.283 in 18 G), with 20 passed balls and only 7 runs and 4 walks. In '17, he hit .298/.365/.524 with 13 homers and 45 RBI in 45 games for Missoula, showing good pop. He tied for 6th in the Pioneer League in dingers and led backstops with 13 passed balls. He did not make the All-Star team as Hendrik Clementina and Luis Paz were picked at catcher. Baseball America rated him as the league's #12 prospect, between Eduardo Diaz and Stuart Fairchild. [5]
With the Hillsboro Hops in 2018, he hit .297/.382/.452 with 8 homers in 63 games and fielded .995 behind the dish. He was 10th in the Northwest League in average, 7th in OBP (between Bobby Honeyman and Josh Stowers), 10th in OPS and fielding percentage at catcher. He was named the NWL All-Star DH. [6] Baseball America listed him as the 15th-best prospect in the loop, between Matt Talor and Owen Miller. [7]
He made Canada's team for the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier. He got into only two games, but was excellent - 2 for 3, 3 walks, a double, four runs and two RBI. Canada won a spot in the 2019 Pan American Games. [8] He played mainly first base in 2019 with Hillsboro (.220/.331/.345 in 63 G) and the Kane County Cougars (.104/.176/.144 in 33 G) in a big drop-off from the prior two seasons. He still made Canada's squad for the 2019 Premier 12.
He was named to the Canadian team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic but bowed out prior to the tournament and was replaced by Dasan Brown.
