Biographical Information[edit]

Alex Monsalve played parts of two seasons in AAA and has been on the Venezuelan national team.

Monsalve was signed by Cleveland Indians scouts Henry Centeno and Jesus Mendoza in July 2008. [1] He hit .274/.337/.335 for the 2009 DSL Indians and threw out 39% of those who tried to steal. Coming stateside, he slipped to .220/.243/.313 for the AZL Indians. He rebounded to .264/.313/.356 for the 2011 Lake County Captains. His 121 hits were 5th in the Indians chain.

Alex split 2012 between Lake County (.265/.324/.406 in 73 G) and the Carolina Mudcats (.233/.280/.293 in 34 G) then played for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League (.340/.360/.447 in 13 G; he split catching with Austin Romine). He was picked for the 2012 Rising Stars Game. [2] Elbow injuries limited him to 25 games in 2013, 21 for the Akron Aeros (.295/.304/.449 in 21 G) and four in a rehab stint for the AZL Indians (3 for 13, BB, R, 2 RBI). He made his Venezuelan Winter League debut with the Bravos de Margarita, going 3 for 12 in 2013-2014, as Manny Piña, Henry Blanco and Elias Díaz were the main backstops there.

In 2014, he hit .265/.321/.384 for the Mudcats, fielding .992 as the backup to Jeremy Lucas. He was 5 for 17 with two walks, a run and two RBI for the 2014-2015 Bravos. He was troubled by back problems in 2015 [3], playing only 27 games between the Lynchburg Hillcats (.250/.327/.359 in 26 G) and AZL Indians (1 for 3, R). He batted .303/.325/.395 for Margarita, throwing out 47% as the #2 option behind Díaz. In 2016, he played for Lynchburg (.219/.293/.301 in 21 G), Akron (.297/.352/.406 in 18 G) and the Columbus Clippers (1 for 4). He hit .296/.424/.296 in 35 plate appearances for the Bravos in the winter.

The Toronto Blue Jays signed him as a free agent. [4] He split 2017 between the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (.284/.310/.321 in 24 G) and Buffalo Bisons (.250/.283/.357 in 19 G). In 2018-2019, he was 2 for 8 with a RBI for the Tigres de Aragua. He fell to .215/.268/.308 for them in 2019-2020, backing up Wilfredo Gimenez; he did throw out 8 of 16 on the bases. In 2020-2021, he batted .273/.324/.485 in 12 games for Aragua.

Debuting for Venezuela in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, he hit cleanup in their opener against defending champ Puerto Rico. He struck out against Luis Cruz in the second but then doubled off him in the 4th and scored to tie it at two. Down 3-2 in the 6th, he singled off Freddie Cabrera and an error on the play tied it, then he scored the winner when Juan Infante singled him in. [5]
