Alex Gounaris has pitched for the Greek national team.
He debuted for Greece in the 2016 European Championship. Playing regularly at third and also pitching, he went 2 for 19 and fielded .826. He drove in a pair, one behind team leader Dimitri Kourtis. His hits came off Junior Oberto and Antonio Horvatic. He got one start on the hill, against Belgium. He retired Sam Buelens but then hit Benjamin Dille and Thomas De Wolf singled. Hans Heyrman doubled in a pair and jamie Verheyleweghen grounded in another. Gounaris walked Rob Lewis and Lucas Rizzi. Benjamin Goffaux hit into a two-run error and Yves Poesmans singled before Gounaris again retired Buelens. Dionysios Marathonitis relieved in the second. He tied Felix Brown for 3rd in the Euros in errors, behind Nico Filice and Martin Schneider. [1]
Gounaris did better in the 2017 B-Level European Championship; the New York native was 4 for 16 with a run and two RBI, stealing a base and fielding .969. He also threw a shutout inning. In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he had a 6.75 ERA in three outings and went 0 for 2 with a walk. He got the save in Dean Christidis's win over Ireland. [3]
