History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2021 Cleveland Indians were considered as serious contenders for the AL Central title when the season started and indeed were in first place after five weeks, after sweeping the surprising Kansas City Royals in a four-game series from May 3-6. But in spite of that, they were twice the victims of a no-hitter in their first 31 games: on April 14th, Carlos Rodon of the Chicago White Sox pulled off the feat in an 8-0 win, and on May 7th, it was Wade Miley of the Cincinnati Reds who did so, this one a 3-0 win. The two games were outliers, though, as they had had only two other games in which they had been held to less than two runs since the start of the year.

On July 23rd, the team announced that it had settled on a new name and that it would be known as the "Cleveland Guardians" starting the following season, after over 100 years as the Indians. On July 29th, Manager Terry Francona went on a health-related leave of absence for the remainder of the season as he had to undergo hip surgery, among other ailments. Bench coach DeMarlo Hale took over as interim manager for the remainder of the season.
